Honesty hour time: Exfoliation was not always part of my skincare routine. Now I know how important it is to exfoliate regularly, so I’m here to share the news with y’all!
I didn’t think I needed to exfoliate because I was young (FALSE!) and I thought my skin was too sensitive to use an exfoliator on (also FALSE, my skin isn’t sensitive and there are exfoliators out there for sensitive skin!).
Oh, how much I have learned in a short time!
Exfoliating is my No. 1 favorite thing to do now and the one part of my skincare routine that I always try to make time for, even when my schedule is cramped.
The best part?
You don’t need to exfoliate every day (in fact, you shouldn’t) and it doesn’t take that long at all.
You can do it in the shower while you condition your hair, you can leave an exfoliator on for a few minutes while you brush your teeth… it doesn’t have to be a huge time suck, but it should be part of your routine.
Why should I exfoliate?
1. Get rid of the buildup of dead skin cells.
Want refreshed, clean, smooth skin? Use an exfoliator regularly.
2. Keep your pores clean and clear and prevent clogging.
Clogged pores = blackheads and acne! If you struggle with blemishes and you aren’t exfoliating, add an exfoliator to your routine.
I have always gotten blackheads and acne along my chin and jaw, but I exfoliate along those problem areas twice a week and have seen an insane change in how my skin looks and feels. Less blemishes, thank you!
3. Reduce the size of your pores.
Clogged pores often appear bigger! If you notice that your pores are visibly larger, they may be clogged. An exfoliation sesh will clear the impurities from your pores, reduce blemishes and reduce the overall size of your pores.
4. Brighten your skin and ease discoloration, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.
Speeding up the skin renewal process means healthier, younger skin cells are taking the place of the older cells, not to mention that when your older, dead skin cells are left to gather, you might experience dull skin or dry patches.
Exfoliation renews skin in areas where you might be experiencing discoloration or wrinkles and brings back a healthy glow to your skin. Yes please!
How often should I exfoliate?
I recommend that you exfoliate two to three times a week. If you’re using a product with more grit, exfoliate less. With a gentler product, two to three times a week is fine.
If your skin is ultra sensitive, monitor how your skin reacts to once a week and adjust from there.
Can I exfoliate if I have sensitive skin?
If you have sensitive skin, avoid gritty scrubs and go for a milder, gentler exfoliator. If you’re worried your skin might be too sensitive even for a gentle exfoliator, you can also exfoliate with a regular cleanser and use a washcloth in a gentle, circular motion.
Interested in my favorite exfoliator? I love the SeneGence facial resurfacer! It is very gritty and leaves my face feeling SO clean and fresh after I use it. If you have more sensitive skin, I recommend the polishing exfoliator – it is a gentler grit and will be great for more sensitive skin!
